"First NeoPraxis (Cochlear) Clinical Trials" - Australian Site becomes first NeoPraxis (Cochlear) Clinical Trials Centre.
Although not a cure, we would like to inform your readersship of an interesting research project funded by an Australian medical insurance agency. The "WalkBack to the Future" research centre in Sydney, Australia has become the first (of 5) Clinical Trials sites investigating the efficacy and outcomes of using a 24-channel implanted neuroprosthesis (based on the Cochlear Industries auditory implant), to restore functional and clinical outcomes for Thoracic-levels individuals with SCI.
The goals of this research project are to investigate the functional outcomes of utilising an implanted 24-channel FES neuroprosthesis plus minimal orthotic bracing to enable motor outcomes (sit-stand, stepping, stand-sit, transfers) in T-level individuals with tramatic acquired paraplegia. Other outcomes, such as bowel and bladder function, sexual function (in males), buttocck pressure relief and pain neuromodulation are also under research investigation.
Chief Investigators are:
Dr. James Middleton -- Moorong Spinal Injuries Centre, Royal North Shore Hospital
A/Prof Glen Davis -- Rehabilitation Research Centre, The University of Sydney
Dr Richard Smith -- Biomechanics Unit, School of Exercise Sciences, The University of Sydney
Dr Bill Fisher -- Biomedical Egineering Department, Royal North Shore Hospital
The principal research aim is to compare the outcomes after an implanted FES neurosprosthetic system to a skin-surface system in terms of clinical and functional efficacy and outcomes.
